The little boy had been bitten by a puppy in Sri Lanka while on vacation. The 10-year-old child, originally from the Rhône, died Tuesday evening in Lyon. A rare situation in France: since 1970, 23 people have been identified as having had rabies in France after contracting the disease abroad.
The ten-year-old boy, suffering from rabies after being bitten by a puppy in Sri Lanka, died Tuesday evening in Lyon, according to AFP.
The child, originally from the Rhône, was bitten in mid-August while stroking the animal on a beach in Dikwella, in southern Sri Lanka . But the “banal” bite did not worry the family. Since rabies has an incubation period of 20 to 60 days on average, the boy had only been hospitalized in Lyon on October 4 and placed in intensive care. On Monday, the national reference center (CNR) for rabies at the Institut Pasteur confirmed the diagnosis.
About sixty people have been vaccinated
About sixty people, members of the child’s family, but also students and staff from his school, have benefited from a vaccination, the second phase of which will take place on Thursday, according to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
There have been no more cases of “autochthonous” rabies in humans in metropolitan France since 1924. The only cases listed recently concern people having contracted the disease abroad: 23 precedents since 1970, the last dating back to 2014, according to health authorities.
