Floods and landslides have left at least 24 dead in India and 164 dead in Sri Lanka, according to a new report released on Monday by authorities as a cyclone that originated in the Bay of Bengal is heading towards Bangladesh.
According to meteorological services, a depression that originated in the Bay of Bengal intensified to become Cyclone Mora. Torrential rains hit Sri Lanka causing floods and landslides that killed 164 people. India, where 24 people died from summer thunderstorms that precede the monsoon, expects very heavy rains within 36 hours.
India has issued rain warnings for its northeastern states: Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
For its part, Sri Lanka has launched an appeal for international aid.
Some parts of the country, especially in the tourist region of Galle, are no longer accessible.
The water rose to a height of three floors
