A newly hired executioner threw his neck out at the sight of the gallows for which he was responsible, the Sri Lankan head of prisons announced on Tuesday.
“We will have to look for a new executioner”
“He said he was scared after seeing the gallows” for the first time, said prison officer Chandrarathna Pallegama.
The executioner, hired in early March, was confronted for the first time with his work tool on Thursday. “He hasn’t come back to work since. I think we will have to look for a new executioner, ” added Mr. Pallegama.
Two more resignations
The two previous executioners had resigned after being reported ill on several occasions. Yet the salary of $ 85 per month is reasonable in Sri Lanka, and the last capital execution dates back to 1976 …
In the absence of people to hang, the executioner is responsible for small administrative tasks. “Now that this guy is gone, we’re really in trouble. If the government decided to resume the hangings, we would not be ready unless we could quickly replace the executioner ” , according to Mr. Pallegama
