Gotabaya Rajapaksa, candidate of the powerful Rajapaksa clan who is aiming for a return to power in Sri Lanka, claimed victory in Saturday’s presidential election on Sunday.
“We had between 53 and 54%” of the vote, told AFP his spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella. The first official results actually showed the 70-year-old ex-soldier heading towards the majority of votes.
