Port workers in southern Sri Lanka rescued a baby elephant from a manhole cover on Sunday. He was then evacuated for treatment.
A baby elephant trapped in a sewer in the town of Hambantota, in southern Sri Lanka , was saved on Sunday. The ten port workers who came to his rescue did not spare their efforts.
It is impossible to know how the animal got in such an awkward position, but it seems that it broke a leg in its fall.
Evacuated to receive treatment
As shown in the video posted on Youtube by the ABC channel , the improvised rescuers had to break some of the asphalt with a pickax to enlarge the pipeline. They then surrounded the pachyderm with ropes and hoisted it onto the public road. The animal, visibly in bad shape and weakened, was then evacuated for medical treatment.
As RTL specifies , elephants are present in large numbers in this region of the country. An orphanage even exists to accommodate pachyderms victims of accidents, deforestation or poaching.
